Abstract
There has been an increase in complexity and fragmentation of production processes over the last couple of decades. This is reflected in a rise in various global value chains (GVC) participation indices, including those created by Antràs and Chor (2018) and Miller and Temurshoev (2015). However, at a more micro level, there is relatively less information about India’s participation in the GVCs. Against this backdrop, this paper makes an attempt to assess the extent of India’s participation in global value chains using plant level data.
A recent report, jointly produced by the World Bank and World Trade Organization, claims that GVCs claims that integration into GVCs would increase jobs and incomes in developing countries. (WB-WTO 2019). Consequently, India and other developing nations have increased their focus on policies aimed at integration of firms into GVCs. The objective of this paper is to empirically test the claim that participation in GVCs would indeed result in higher employment and wages at a firm level.
