Abstract
Today school enrollment in India is virtually universal and a majority of youth continue to secondary education, even girls. However, rising education does not translate into rising employment opportunities for women or ability to secure husbands with high levels of education. Using data from India Human Development Survey, a nationally representative survey of over 42,000 households, I examine educational differentials in women’s employment and marriage patterns and examine the extent to which secular increases in income and education account for these puzzling results.
